JK was just diagnosed with aggressive but early stage prostate cancer. His urologist recommended immediate surgery which, he assured JK, offered the best chance for cure. But it also carried the risk of permanent impotence. Other treatment possibilities he had read about included radiation, radioactive seed implants, cryotherapy [freezing the tumor] and proton beam therapy.

JR asked for help evaluating his options. We first sent his biopsy specimen to a recognized expert for a second opinion. While waiting for the results, we started JK on an herbal anti-inflammatory medication with proven effectiveness against prostate cancer recurrence, added some other cancer-fighting supplements and changed his diet. Almost immediately, he reported a dramatic lessening of the chronic prostatitis symptoms that had plagued him for years. The second opinion reported a somewhat less aggressive cancer than the original pathology report indicated.

We then conducted a comprehensive medical literature search which showed non-significant differences in 10 year disease-free survival when treatment was with surgery or radiation or seed implant. Proton beam therapy, available at only a few centers nationwide, seemed to offer the least problems with side effects, including impotence. But as the newest treatment modality, disease-free survival had only been measured for 5 years, at which time it was equivalent to the others. And surgery, especially in the hands of surgeons with limited experience in “nerve-sparing” techniques, carried the highest rate of impotence.

Although we were able to find surgeons with extensive experience, JK opted for proton-beam therapy. It was completely successful in eradicating the tumor and did not interfere with his sexual ability.

JK currently feels better than he has in years, and looks forward to many more.
